The E.444 are railway locomotives designed in the sixties to provide the State Railways with very powerful and fast vehicles, suitable for towing the most important trains, in particular express trains and international service and all types of convoys that could arriving on the straightest sections at speeds of 180 km/h with peaks of 200 km/h, when all the other locomotives existing at the time did not exceed 140 km/h.
For twenty years (the seventies and eighties) the E.444s were the flagship of Italian locomotives, whose role was then inherited by the E.402 group.
