Source: Wikipedia
At the beginning of the seventies, the Italian State Railways, as part of the plan to strengthen and modernize the service, designed a new version of a unified Diesel locomotive suitable for both freight and passenger transport.
Given the good results achieved with the machines of the first series, in 1979 the order for the second series was perfected, which was born already equipped for remote control from a possible semi-pilot carriage.
By the end of the 1980s, the entire group numbered 150 units and became the only type of diesel locomotive used for passenger trains.
The diesel engine is a 4-stroke, direct injection engine, with a displacement of 95,700 cm³ and a power output of 1,560 kW (2,120 hp) at 1,500 rpm.
The D.445s were originally equipped with curved, wraparound front windows; starting in the 1980s, they were replaced by flat windows, which were more robust and economical. All the cars have a B'B' wheel arrangement and are approved for a maximum speed of 130 km/h.
